Windows 8 on Older PCs?

Most of the libraries and nonprofits I visit have older PCs. We installed Windows 8 and Office 2010 Standard on a classic Windows XP computer, a Dell Optiplex GX 280 from 2005. The press reports I found mostly concurred that Windows 8 seems to work well on two- or three-year-old equipment, but what about a vintage seven year old PC?
